Title: Building solid foundations
Summary: Mathematics is a subject which inherently relies on the building blocks. Missing bricks early leads to ever-widening holes in knowledge later on. This talk delves into the complexity of primary mathematics teaching and how it needs to provide solid foundations for secondary school and beyond. It seeks to balance raw facts, intuitive understanding, and practical work, at the same time promoting subject enjoyment. It will also provide ideas for secondary teachers looking to encourage and assist their primary colleagues to better prepare students for the future.
